P2P Git Sync with iroh

What about using iroh to enable peer-to-peer Git sync in Yaak? Instead of relying on a central server, devices could sync repositories directly using iroh’s networking, with relays as a fallback when direct connections aren’t possible.

You could even host our own relay with custom authentication to keep the infrastructure under our control. This could make syncing between devices seamless while preserving a self-hosted approach.

Some interesting projects to explore:

Yaak’s Git sync runs the git CLI, so a remote helper like git-remote-iroh may already work: install it, add an iroh remote to the repo, and sync as usual. I haven’t tried it, so I’d love to hear if it works for you.

Generally, it works, but both projects have their limitations:

https://codeberg.org/cmars/git-remote-iroh cannot be compiled on Windows, but it supports authentication. (os::unix::fs::{DirBuilderExt, OpenOptionsExt, PermissionsExt},) https://github.com/magik6k/git-remote-iroh can be compiled on Windows and works with both Yaak and Git, but it doesn’t support authentication. (The URL is a bearer capability. It contains the endpoint’s public key and a random 128-bit secret; anyone who has the full URL can fetch the repository (and push, with –writable). Share it like a password.)

It might be worth having a dedicated Yaak project for this, for example, a “Yaak-P2P-Repository” as server. And maybe run an own relay as (paid) service https://docs.iroh.computer/concepts/relays.

https://github.com/wronex/iroh-git This one works quite nice and even has a server with tray icon to control.

Thanks for testing this! Good that iroh-git works end to end with Yaak. A Yaak-hosted relay probably isn’t in the cards, but I’ll keep this open as a reference for anyone else who comes across it.
